    Comment écrit-on l’histoire d’une industrie, ou même d’un « matériau industriel » tel que l’aluminium ? Et quels rapports cette histoire industrielle entretient-elle avec la ou plutôt les mémoires de ceux qui en ont été les responsables – ingénieurs, techniciens, ouvriers ? Ces questions ne renvoient pas seulement à la tension qui peut exister entre mémoire subjective et histoire objective – car ce matériau, au-delà des enjeux propres à la production et à ses usages immédiats, porte à sa manière la trace d’une histoire sociale et culturelle qui déborde en partie le champ des narrations balisées.
    
    

    How can be written the history of an industry, or even that of an industrial material such as aluminium? And what relations does that industrial history bear to the memories of those who were responsible for it: engineers, technicians, workers? Those questions not only reflect the tension between subjective memory and objective history, for that material, beyond the issues of production and immediate use, bears in its way the traces of a cultural and social history which partly outgrows the field of common narratives.
