- Résumé indiqué en début d'article :
"The economic trends in aluminium smelting over the past 30 years areexamined. Smelter operating margins are seen to be declining in realterms, while greenfield projects often struggle to cover their cost ofcapital. The application of technology developments and capacity creep toolder smelters is extending their life and reducing the competitiveadvantage that technology has traditionally afforded to modern smelters.Future trends in the industry are discussed. Increasingly, the availabilityand price of power will dictate industry developments in the context of arapid growth in demand for metal from developing countries over the nextdecades. The proportion of this growth picked up by smelters operating intraditional western locations may not be substantial however, unless theinvestment cost per tonne of capacity can be substantially improved."
