    Après avoir rappelé l'origine du procédé Bayer, breveté en 1888, et la naissance de la British Aluminium Company en 1894, l'article étudie les développements des usines d'alumine de Lame (1895), Burntisland (1917) et Newport (1939) au Royaume-Uni; ce développement, lié à l'approvisionnement en bauxite, conduisit la British Aluminium à acquérir l'Union des Bauxites (1901) exploitant des gisements français dans le Var et, en 1941, à mettre en exploitation ceux découverts par la Compagnie au Ghana. Les évolutions techniques du procédé sont décrites ainsi que l'évolution des moyens de production jusqu'au rachat de la société par le groupe canadien Alcan en 1982.

    
    
    

    After recalling the origin of the Bayer process, patented in 1888, and the birth of the British Aluminium Company in 1894, the article studies the development of the alumina plants of Lame (1895), Burntisland (1917) and Newport (1939) in the UK; this development, linked to the supply of bauxite, led British Aluminium to acquire Union des Bauxites (1901), operating the French deposits in the Var, and in 1941 to mine those discovered by the company in Ghana. The technical developments of the process and the production facilities are described, up to the purchase of the company by the Canadian group Alcan in 1982.
