    La construction d’une usine de fabrication d’aluminium à Dunkerque a été l’un des grands projets industriels développés par le groupe Pechiney durant les années 1980. Le concours d’un cabinet d’architecture, l’atelier Richard Plottier, a contribué aux qualités particulières du bâtiment : maîtrise du gigantisme, insertion dans le paysage, soin porté aux espaces de circulation, recherche de création de lieux de vie à l'échelle humaine. En donnant à lire de nombreux documents, témoignages des acteurs impliqués dans le projet Aluminium Dunkerque, l’article retrace la répartition des rôles et des compétences entre Pechiney, entreprise dotée d’une forte expertise dans le domaine de la construction d’usines d’électrolyse, et la maîtrise d’œuvre, sociétés d’ingénierie et architectes. Richard Plottier retrace les intentions qui ont guidé son projet.

    
    
    

    Construction of an aluminium plant at Dunkerque was one of the major industrial projects developed by the Pechiney group in the 1980's. It was the contribution of an architectural firm, Richard Plottier's studio, that helped furnish the specific qualities of the building: mastery of gigantism, landscape blending, special attention paid to traffic circuits, search for the creation of living spaces on a human scale. In providing readers with numerous documents that bear witness to those involved in the Aluminium Dunkerque project, the article depicts the roles and skills shared between Pechiney, a company equipped with strong expertise in the field of aluminium smelter construction, and the engineering and architectural company prime contractors. Richard Plottier recounts the intentions that guided his projet.
