    "This paper presents an overview of the mergers and acquisitions of the Canadian aluminium company Alcan in Europe and their influence on the overall industry structure. We show how these M&A activities changed significantly over time from the interwar period until the present day and were driven by a wide range of motivations, in which efficiency considerations usually played a marginal role. This stands in stark contrast with much of the current M&A literature, where these considerations occupy a central position. We will also discuss the role of cartels and competition policy as an important factor shaping both company strategy and industry structure."
