    La concurrence entre Français et Américains, dans l’industrie de l’aluminium, existe depuis l’origine du procédé Héroult/Hall. Si la rivalité est très forte dans le domaine de l’électrolyse, elle existe aussi dans la transformation. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, un certain nombre d’améliorations techniques sont apportées aux techniques de laminage et relancent la compétition technologique entre les sociétés européennes et américaines. La création du Jumbo 3C, par la Société de conditionnement en aluminium (Scal), en 1977, participe à cette histoire des procédés et montre, de l’intérieur, comment les Français ont su mobiliser leurs capacités commerciales, scientifiques et techniques pour s’ouvrir un nouveau marché.

    
    
    

    Competition between the French and the Americans in the aluminium industry has existed since the origin of the Héroult/Hall process. While rivalry is very high in the electrolysis field, it also exists in conversion. Following the Second World war, a series of improvements are made to laminating techniques, giving a new impetus to technological competition between European and American companies. Scal’s creation of the Jumbo 3C in 1977 is part of that history of processes and gives an inside view of how the French succeeded in mobilising their commercial, scientific and technical abilities in order to open up to the new market.
