From the 1950s onwards Spain became the theatre of complex strategic manoeuvres by aluminium producers Alcan and Pechiney - with both companies trying to dominate what was considered a very promising market. Through its state-holding Instituto Nacional de Industria (INI), the Spanish government also played an active role in the evolving relationship, first encouraging competition, and then fomenting collaboration between the Canadian and French companies. The paper examines the strategic decisions of Alcan as well as their sometimes unintended - consequences with an emphasis on the role of competition, markets, technologies and politics.
