    As an input of aluminum, which was not only indispensable for aircraft production, but also the central substitute for non-ferrous metals, alumina was of crucial importance for Nazi rearmament and autarky policy. This article examines the role of the state in promoting research and development of processes for extracting alumina from German raw materials, which was intended to substitute bauxite, which had to be imported. The state initiated and motivated companies to take up research since 1936, and created favourable conditions for successful process development by using considerable financial resources. The most important of these processes, and which tied up considerable resources, was the Séailles-Dyckerhoff technology, which was developed on the basis of a French patent by the German cement producer Dyckerhoff, and which started production during the war.
    
    En tant qu’intrant de l’aluminium, indispensable à la production aéronautique et principal agent de substitution des métaux non ferreux, l’alumine était capitale au réarmement et à la politique d’autarcie nazis. Cet article traite du rôle de l’État dans la promotion de la recherche et du développement de procédés d’extraction de l’alumine à partir de matières premières allemandes, l’alumine étant destinée à remplacer le bauxite, disponible uniquement par importation. À partir de 1936, l’État déclenche et incite les entreprises à mener des recherches et crée des conditions propices au bon développement des procédés en investissant des ressources financières conséquentes. Le procédé le plus déterminant, mobilisant des ressources considérables et dont la production fut enclenchée pendant la guerre, est la technologie Séailles-Dyckerhoff, développée par le cimentier allemand Dyckerhoff à partir d’un brevet français.
