    En un siècle, la consommation d'aluminium a crû de façon spectaculaire, malgré la vive compétition des autres matériaux. Quel fut le comportement du métal face à ses concurrents, comment ont évolué l'attitude et la place des producteurs français relativement à l'histoire générale et aux grands cycles économiques ? La progression de la production d'aluminium est tendancielle, quoiqu'elle connaisse des inflexions notables. Décollage, explosion, maturité furent les trois grandes étapes de la conquête des marchés. Les graphiques attestent de l'influence de "l'économie-monde" sur la production en général et montrent la spécificité française. Pourquoi la France se singularisa-t-elle ? Quelle fut la part des événements nationaux ? En quoi la régulation et la dérégulation monétaires et celles du cours des matériaux touchèrent la production ; dans quelle mesure le cours du métal influença l'innovation et détermina la place des producteurs français ? La prise en compte de tous ces paramètres permet d'esquisser des réponses et de replacer l'histoire du métal dans l'ample mouvement de croissance et de progrès technique au XXe siècle.

    
    
    

    Aluminium consumption bas grown spectacularly over the past century, in spite of tough competition from other materials. How did this metal face up to its competitors? How have the attitude and position of French producers evolved in relation to history in general and the major economic cycles in particular? The increase in aluminium production is a definite trend, although there have been some notable slowdowns. The three major stages in conquering new markets were: initial take-off, explosion, and maturity. Graphs show the influence of the "world economy" on production in general and show the special character of the French market. Why is France unusual? What role was played by national events? How have monetary regulation and deregulation, as well as raw materials prices affected production? To what extent did the price of metal have an influence on innovation and determine the position of French producers? By taking all these parameters into account, it is possible to outline some answers and situate the history of this metal in the overall trend towards growth and technical progress in the 20th century.
